6 weeks, that is how long it took for the container to finally arrive on 30 October....
4 days to release the goods in the harbor of Banjoul, inspection of the goods, endless paperwork....
58 hours of patiently waiting in Gambia for my toys to arrive....
And hurray, finally on 1 November everything is set. The container got driven to the arranged meeting point and all of the goods got unloaded. And finally in the furthest corners of the container, my toys appeared. My heart just skipped a beat…
Every single thing had arrived and could get loaded into the bus and get transported to Sedhiou. The many checkpoints on the way, as well as customs kept me on my toes. And finally all the toys are here, some still at my home and others already at the kindergarten, ready for the opening on 5 November 2018. I still can hardly believe it.
This small miracle could only come true thanks to the friendly support of the Container Shipping GMBH, Schweiz and Aziz Cisse of Gambia. 28 Boxes full of toys finally found their way from Hägglingen to Goudiabya. The children will be thrilled. Again - Thank you very much.
Now I am really looking forward to the opening of the kindergarten. I will tell you all about it in my next report.
Only 24 Days left, until the Grand Opening of the Kindergarten in Goudiabya on 5 November 2018
Heavy and longer than normal lasting rainfalls as well as a very fierce wind, put a stop to our work for a full week, after I had arrived back on 4 October. Not a single truck could drive to the kindergarten and no grass could get cut (it had grown into a meadow with high bushes in between in only 4 monts time).
Looking on the bright side, this gave me time to move into my and my partner Elhadji's new home. It took six very loaded donkey carts to transport my things and one day to unpack and get organized. I am starting to feel at home, even though lots of things are still very improvised.
Top Priority is Goudiabya and the Grand Opening of the Kindergarten 5 November 2018.
The weather has finally calmed down and we are back to: on your marks, get set, go! There are exactly 24 days left until the opening. And again the program is bursting and there is an almost endless to-do list also. Dealing with everything in a confident manner and step by step, without of course letting things get hectic, just doesn't match the African pace.
My very pregnant dog was the exact opposite. She was in a great hurry to give me my welcome home present. The morning after my arrival, she was surrounded by seven puppies.
Now I myself am very curious how everything will work out and get done and will gladly keep you all up-to-date.
Greetings from the humid and hot Sedhiou,
The Unimaginable comes true...
Since the founding of our association in 2014, lots of people have tried time and again to find a shipping company that would transport a container of all of our collected toys to Senegal, without costing a fortune.
We had almost given up hope, when we got a tip in an around about way, that we should try to contact the start-up corporation "Africa Container Shipping GmbH". And it was like a miracle. Finally I found someone who really listened to my idea to fill empty corners of a container with our boxes of toys. This company was friendly and also helpful. They really appreciated our kindergarten projects and within only three weeks they found a client who was willing to let us ship our toys in his container, way down to Gambia. (Banjoul to Goudiabya is closer to our kindergarten than Dakar to Goudiabya).
Today is the day, on 6 September, Mrs. Christine Fischer from the company "Africa Container Shipping GmbH" even helped me transport our boxes to Seon, where the container was placed. I was able to bring 28 boxes of toys and stock for the kindergarten, two sewing machines and a bicycle to Seon. Aziz Ceesay, who had ordered the container for the transportation of his own goods, welcomed me. "And what if not all of our things fit in the container?", I asked him. And this very helpful and easygoing man of Gambia answered, that in that case, he would ship some of his own goods in the next container. C'est Afrique. That's Africa.
So now all of our toys are on the way and should arrive in Gambia by the middle of October. That is before the grand opening of our kindergarten on 29 October (maybe 5 November 2018).
I can most warmly recommend this company for any kind of shipment to or from Africa. To get in contact with "Africa container Shipping GmbH", Mr. Jannik Fischer is your contact person and he can be reached at the following telephone number: 061 515 67 64
My heartfelt thanks goes to Mrs. Fischer and to the whole company for their wonderful commitment. They even exceeded my expectations by paying the transportation costs of CHF 250.- as well. Another heartfelt thankyou goes to Aziz Ceesay of course for his altruistic and benevolent service.
When I travelled to the south of Senegal for the first time, I liked the region "Casamance" right away. Although it is the poorest region of Senegal, people were kind and helpful.
But the harsh reality is unmistakable, hardly anyone has a job, and they often lack the necessary money for basic needs. All do their best to independently earn anything with a craft or artwork.

Idea, contacts, planning and assistance for projects in Senegal
Senegal is a country in West Africa. Its territory is about half the size of Germany and extends from the foothills of the Sahara in the north, where the land borders with Mauritania, to the beginning of the tropical moist forest in the south, where it meets the neighbouring states Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. It reaches the the cool Atlantic coast in the west and goes as far as the hot Sahel region on the border of Mali. The southern parts of the french-speaking Senegal, Casamance, is separated from the rest of the country by the english-speeking, small state of Gambia that reaches far into the state of Senegal from the east.
